SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Due to impending weather conditions, the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team traveled to Iowa to battle Dordt College in a Great Plains Athletic Conference showdown Monday in Sioux Center, Iowa.
Dordt came out on top in both games, 4-2 and 3-0.
After both teams recorded runs in the first inning, it was Dordt (20-21, 13-11 GPAC) that went on to plate two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and a run in the sixth to keep DWU (16-26, 11-13 GPAC) out of striking distance.
Tramane Moore (Los Banos, Calif.) was the lone Tiger with a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with a double. Jerrod Zens (Alexandria, S.D.) tallied his second career home run, while going 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Junior Steven Sagasty (Pacifica, Calif.) went the distance, but ultimately took the loss after tossing six innings, allowing three earned runs off seven hits, while striking out three and walking two.
Despite having the bases loaded, the Tigers were unable to muster any offense in the finale.
Tyler Waddle (Huron, S.D.), Zach Uttecht (Pierce, Neb.) and Reed Harter (Colome, S.D.) were the only Tigers to record a hit in Game Two as Dordt starting pitcher Brandon Fokkema tossed a complete game three-hit shutout.
Senior Steven Somerville (Ajax, Toronto, Canada) was tagged with the loss after tossing four and one-third innings, allowing three earned runs off seven hits, while striking out three and walking two.
The Tigers step out of conference play to take on future GPAC foe, the University of Jamestown for one-nine inning contest Wednesday in Redfield, S.D. First pitch will be announced at a later date.
