MITCHELL, S.D. – Freshman Ty Hoglund scored a career-high 34 points en route to a 107-73 victory for the No. 13 Dakota Wesleyan University Tigers over Dordt College in Great Plains Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D.
The first half began with the lead changing hands four times in the first six minutes of action. The Tigers (17-5, 8-2 GPAC) regained the one-point lead off a Hoglund made free throw, and would not give up the advantage for the remainder of the game. The Dell Rapids, S.D., native scored 13 straight points late in the half to push the Tiger lead to 13 with 1:38 remaining. Heading into the locker room, DWU led the Defenders (12-11, 3-8 GPAC) 54-29.
Dordt ultimately attempted to put a dent in the deficit in the second half as they cut the lead to 19 following an 11-2 run with 11:20 left in the game. However, the Tigers continued to drain 3-pointers for the remainder of the way and took a 26-point lead after Kaleb Johnson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) nailed back-to-back 3-pointers. The lead grew to as much as 36 points for the Tigers as they cruised to victory.
Hoglund led all scorers with 34 points and added five rebounds. Tate Martin (Mitchell, S.D.) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Jason Spicer (Sioux Falls, S.D.) fell shy of a double-double with 18 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Trae Vandeberg (Madison, S.D.) tallied 13 points while Johnson nailed 12 points. The Tigers shot 60.3 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from 3-point range, while Dordt shot 40.6 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from beyond the arc.
The Tigers take on GPAC foe Doane College at 4 p.m. Saturday in Crete, Neb.
