DWU FOOTBALL KICKS OFF 2021 SEASON AGAINST DAKOTA STATE

Mitchell, S.D. – Dakota Wesleyan football begins its season at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28 from Joe Quintal field.  The first game of the 2021 season for the Tigers is a nonconference matchup with the Trojans of Dakota State.

 

ABOUT THE TIGERS

  • DWU finished the last three games of the 2020 season 3-0 as they look to pick up where they left off.
  • In the 2020 season, the Tigers averaged 302.4 yards per game with five rushing touchdowns and 18 passing touchdowns.
  • Dakota Wesleyan's leading rusher returns for this season in Jamin Arend.  Last year, Arend averaged 58.1 yards per contest, scoring three touchdowns.
  • The Tigers lost All-Conference Second-Team offensive player Spencer Neugebauer to graduation.
  • Neugebauer led the team in receiving with 85.8 yards per contest, along with nine touchdowns and a 17.2-yard average punt return.
  • DWU returns All-Conference Second-Team defensive player Dominick Warmbein.  He tallied 33 total tackles and 5.5 sacks for a loss of 34 yards.

 

ABOUT THE TROJANS

  • Dakota State kicks off its regular season this weekend after having a scrimmage with Mount Marty.
  • Last season, the Trojans averaged 207.4 yards per game, scoring five rushing touchdowns and 12 passing touchdowns.
  • DSU returns rushing leader Brenner Furlong and receiving leader Dajshon Keel.
  • Furlong averaged 16.5 rushing yards per game, including a single rushing touchdown.
  • Keel averaged 29.8 receiving yards per game with a long of 41 yards.
  • The Trojans are coached by 13-year head coach Josh Anderson.

 

LAST MEETING

  • Dakota Wesleyan is 39-34-1 all time against Dakota State.
  • In 2019, the Tigers dropped a close game to the Trojans 33-30.
  • DWU outrushed DSU in total net yards 223-215. 
  • Kiel Nelson ran for 50 yards and threw for 143 yards in the loss.
