Tigers split with Hastings in GPAC battle

HASTINGS, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team split a pair of Great Plains Athletic Conference games on Sunday with Hastings College in Hastings, Neb.

 The Tigers (11-22, 1-3 GPAC) scored the first run of the game, followed by two runs in the second inning to take the early 3-2 lead. However, four runs in the bottom of the third allowed the Broncos (17-17, 4-4 GPAC) to regain the lead and finish with a 6-4 victory in Game One.

 Paige Kinley (Worthington, Minn.) went 3-for-3 with two runs, while Alize Martinez (Palmdale, Calif.) finished 3-for-4 with one run and an RBI. Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.) took the loss after pitching six innings, allowing six runs off 13 hits and striking out four batters.

 After a six-run first inning, the Tigers never looked back as they took Game Two, 13-1. Four runs in the third helped push the lead to 10-0. DWU added three runs in the top of the fifth to end the game in five innings.

 Senior Lorissa Loeppky (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs while pitching five innings and allowing one run off five hits with seven strikeouts. Kinley finished 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, while Katherine Holt (Bullhead City, Ariz.) knocked in two RBIs.

 DWU hosts in-state rival, Mount Marty College at 5 p.m. on Thursday at Dr. McWhirter Field in Mitchell, S.D.
