TUCSON, Ariz. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team began play at the Tucson Invitational with a game against Siena Heights University and Madonna University Sunday in Tucson, Ariz. DWU dropped the matchup against SHU, 10-0 and fell to MU, 11-3.
In the first game of the day, the Tigers (2-8) struggled to get things going early on as SHU held an 8-0 lead. In the bottom of the third frame, Adriana Thomason (Las Vegas, Nev.) doubled to left field to try and kick start the Tiger offense. However, SHU added two more runs in the fifth inning to defeat DWU.
In the second game of the day, the Tigers struck first as they tallied three runs in the first inning. Karly Severance (Las Vegas, Nev.) singled to bring home the first score of the game. One batter later, Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.) singled to bring another run home. Stephanie Gabel (Harrisburg, S.D.) finished the scoring with a single to left field to bring home the third run of the inning.
The Crusaders answered in the second inning with a two-run homerun. Two innings later, MU added four runs to hold a 6-3 lead. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Crusaders ended the game with a pair of ground-rule doubles and a two-run homerun to down the Tigers.
Gabel went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Haage went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Severance finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Haage pitched five and a third innings as she recorded five strikeouts.
The Tigers kick off day two of the Tucson Invitational against Embry-Riddle at noon tomorrow.
