Minot, N.D. – Dakota Wesleyan softball split their final day from the Minot Bubble, taking a game from the University of Mary 13-6, then falling to Valley City State in game two.

How It Happened

Game One

  • DWU flipped a switch in game one today from the Minot Bubble, putting up 13 runs against the University of Mary.
  • Dakota Wesleyan got the leadoff batter out right away with a ground out to third base.
  • The second batter singled to left before the Tigers tallied out number two on a ground out to first base.
  • With a single to the shortstop the Marauders drove across their first run of the game; followed by a double to left field for UMary to lead 2-0 over the Tigers.
  • Nora Nelson led things off in the second inning with a single to left field, then Tianna Boone took a walk to first base placing runners on first and second with no outs.
  • Adriana Thomason loaded the bases on a bunt, as Aubrey Garbarek stepped to the plate and sent the ball up the middle, allowing Nelson and Boone to cross the plate and even the score 2-2.
  • Thomason and Garbarek each stole a base putting them in scoring position.
  • Mickinnely Mull strolled to first base on a walk keeping the bases loaded and scoring a run for the 3-2 lead.
  • Allison McElveny hit a sac fly to center field, allowing Garbarek to score, pushing the lead to 4-2.
  • DWU stranded two runners on base after UMary tallied the final out of the half-inning, but the Tigers drove in four runs on four hits.
  • The University of Mary went three-up and three-down in the bottom of the second.
  • The Tigers allowed UMary to score one run in the third inning.
  • DWU put up another two runs on three hits in the fifth inning for the 6-3 lead as UMary committed one error.

  • Nelson collected a walk with bases loaded, allowing Grossi to score, then Garbarek hit a double to left-center for two RBI.
  • Mull dropped the ball in play to left field with a double, allowing Thomason to score; Grossi hit a single to right field, allowing Garbarek to score.
  • The Final run of the inning was on a bases-loaded walk from Daffern, allowing Mull to trot across the plate.
  • UMary tried to make a comeback but only tallied two runs on three hits and stranded two runners, as DWU grabs their first win of the 2022 season 13-6 over the University of Mary.
  • Garbarek was 4-for-5 with two runs and five RBI, Thomason was 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI.
  • Nelson and Boone both tallied two runs; Mull, Grossi, McElveny, and Daffern all collected a run.
  • Alyssa Burke, Thomason, and Garbarek; each had a stolen base in game one for the day.
  • In the circle, Daffern collected the win, pitching four innings and allowing five hits and two earned runs.
  • Burke was credited with the save after pitching three innings and allowing six hits.

 

Game Two

  • The Tigers' final game from the Minot Bubble started with the Vikings grounding out on back-to-back pitches before the VCSU batter struck out swinging for out number three.
  • Leadoff batter Burke singled to the shortstop, getting on first before being picked off trying to steal second for out number one of the half-inning.
  • Mull singled to left field and was stranded on base as DWU couldn't bring her around as the Tigers lined out to left field and grounded out the third.
  • In the third inning, the Vikings kicked things off with back-to-back home runs scoring three runs before a double to left field, driving across three more for the 7-0 lead over the Tigers.
  • DWU attempted to cut the lead in the bottom of the inning as Burke and Grossi both hit singles but were left stranded on a lineout to third base.
  • Dakota Wesleyan: was unable to control VCSU in the fourth inning as they drove eight runs across.
  • DWU allowed one more run in the fifth inning for the final score of Valley City 16, Dakota Wesleyan zero.
  • Burke was 2-for-3 against the Vikings as McElveny, was left on base three times out of the four total runners left stranded.
  • Daffern was 1-for-2 with a double as Tava Boone tabbed with the loss after pitching 3 1/3 innings and allowing eight hits and three walks.
