TIGER SOFTBALL SPLITS AS THEY OPENED GPAC PLAY THIS AFTERNOON

Yankton, S.D. – Dakota Wesleyan University softball let game one slip away as they led 6-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Tigers rebounded in game two against the Lancers, as they led 5-4 heading into the top of the seventh inning.

How It Happened:

Game One

  • Dakota Wesleyan struck first in game one, after Nora Nelson singled allowing Alyssa Burke to score collecting the 1-0 lead.
  • The Tigers put up another run in the top of the second inning on a sac fly by Peyton Bagley, driving in Tianna Boone for the 2-0 advantage.
  • Mount Marty responded in the bottom of the third inning with a two RBI homerun tying the game before the Lancers scored on an error by the Tigers for the 3-2 lead.
  • The Lancers added their fourth run of the game in the fourth inning on a single to extend their lead 4-2 over the Tigers.
  • DWU hit back-to-back doubles in the sixth by McElveny and Reagan Grossi to tie the game, stranding the go-ahead runner on base.
  • The tie with MMU was short lived as the Lancers plated another runner on a single in the bottom of the sixth for the 5-4 lead.
  • Mull came up big in the seventh with a two RBI single and the 6-5 lead as Mount Marty stepped to the plate.
  • The Lancers tallied the winning run on a one-out single, taking game one 7-6 over the Tigers.
  • In game one, Burke was 1-for-2 with two runs, Mull went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base.
  • McElveny and Grossi each tallied a double; McElveny was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
  • Tava Boone tossed six complete innings allowing 13 hits, seven runs, six earned, and striking out four.

 

Game Two

  • In game two, Adriana Thomason got the Tigers going with the first run of the game after a single to bring Alyssa Burke across the plate and the 1-0 lead.
  • Allison McElveny followed that up with a sac fly to left field that allowing Thomason to cross as DWU led 2-0.
  • Mount Marty drove in a single run in the bottom of the first on a double, then one in both the second and third inning to take the lead 3-2.
  • McKinnely Mull moved the runners in the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3 as Sierra Brown crossed home.
  • DWU regained the lead shortly after on a single by McElveny allowing Burke and McCoy to score with the 5-3 lead.
  • The Lancers made a push to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth, but it only mounted to a solo homerun, cutting the Tiger lead to one, 5-4.
  • Mull sealed the deal for DWU with a solo shot for the 6-4 win in game two over Mount Marty.
  • Burke was 2-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base, Mull went 2-for-4 with one run, a pair of RBI, a homerun and a stolen base.
  • McElveny was 1-for-4 with three RBI.
  • Meghan Daffern collected the complete game win allowing 11 hits, four earned runs, one walk, and one strike out on 31 batters faced.
