TIGERS DROP A PAIR OF GAMES TO HASTINGS

Mitchell, S.D. – Dakota Wesleyan softball came up short in game two of today's doubleheader against the Broncos. A double play in the bottom of the seventh was the difference maker as it spoiled the chance for a late comeback by the Tigers.

How It Happened

Game One

  • Hastings got on the board right away in game one after a lead-off single to third base followed by a two-out double down the left-field line.
  • The Tigers answered in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back hits placing runners at first and second.
  • Nora Nelson stepped to the plate, reaching first on a fielder's choice as Adriana Thomason crossed home plate on an error by the Broncos' second baseman, tying the game at 1-1.
  • Proceeding a scoreless second inning by both sides, Hastings jumped out to an 8-1 lead after posting seven runs on nine hits.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, DWU gained a run back as Alyssa Burke grounded out to the shortstop allowing Peyton Bagley to score, cutting the deficit to 8-2.
  • The final runs of game one came in the top of the sixth inning from the Broncos, driving across five runs on six hits and leaving two runners on base.
  • Burke was 1-for-3 with one RBI as Bagley was 1-for-2 with a run and a triple.
  • Tava Boone was hit with the loss after tossing 5 2.3 innings, allowing 18 hits, and striking out two.

Game Two

  • Hastings jumped ahead right away in game two with a 2-0 lead with a pair of outs already on the board.
  • DWU tightened the score in the bottom of the second inning with two outs as; Aubrey Garbarek singled up the middle for runners on first and third as Nelson scored, cutting the score to 2-1.
  • The Broncos started things in the top of the third inning with a lead-off single to left field.
  • Hastings then put runners on the corners as they hit a bases clearing double into left field for the 4-1 lead.
  • The Tigers quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a walk by Thomason, a single by McKinnely Mull, and another single by Nelson.
  • Tianna Boone plated a run after being hit by a pitch as the bases stayed full, and DWU was looking at a two-run deficit.
  • Allowing one run in the top of the fourth by the Broncos and trailing 5-2, Thomason found a double to left field, clearing the bases and tying the game at 5-5.
  • Two scoreless frames later, Dakota Wesleyan and Hastings entered the top of the seventh.
  • The Broncos led off the final inning with a double to right-center field, placing the go-ahead runner on before they tripled to left field with one out to take the lead 6-5.
  • Dakota Wesleyan got on base right away in the form of Ti. Boone before Jaden Warner came in to pinch hit for Meghan Daffern.
  • Sophie Wietzema stepped up with one out and one on as she represented the go-ahead runner, but ultimately grounded into a double play that cut the comeback short.
  • Nelson went 2-for-3 with one run, Thomason was 1-for-2 with one run, three RBI, and a double.
  • Garbarek was 2-for-3 with a run and one RBI.
  • Daffern collected the loss for the Tigers, tossing seven complete innings, allowing ten hits; and five earned runs.
