HASTINGS, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University wrestling team competed against Hastings College in a Great Plains Athletic Conference dual on Friday and took part in the Cusatis Open on Saturday in Hastings, Neb.
On Friday, the Tigers dropped the dual to the Broncos by a team score of 53-6. In the 149-pound weight class, Mitchell Messersmith (Lennox, S.D.) lost by technical fall in the second period.
However, Marcus Urban (Plankinton, S.D.) helped the Tigers keep pace in the dual as he came away victorious with a fall over Austin Mitchell of Hastings. Other Tigers who competed in the dual included Chris Wheeler (Palmdale, Calif.), Tanner Wernsman (Arapahoe, Neb.) and Xylon Takata (Hilo, Hawaii).
On Saturday, Wheeler kicked things off in the opening round as he fell to Caden Haugen of Dickinson State University. He dropped his second-round matchup by fall in the first period.
Urban came away victorious in his first match of the day as he pinned his opponent in the final seconds of the first period. After dropping his second match, Urban came back and won by an 8-4 decision to move onto the consolation round five. However, Urban's day would end as he was pinned in round five.
Cole Halouska (Worthing, S.D.) lost both of his matches of the day by a major decision and an 8-4 decision in the next round. Takata ended the day with a pair of losses to Graham Shore and Colin Poynter of the Air Force.
The Tigers return to action in a dual against NCAA Division II Augustana University at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Sioux Falls, S.D.
