BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Dakota Wesleyan University track and field team competed in their final tune up for the Great Plains Athletic Conference Championships at the Zach Kindler Wildcat Open hosted by Baker College Saturday in Baldwin City, Kan.
The Tigers got a strong performances from several athletes as the Tigers gear up for the conference meet, where DWU will look to add more athletes to the list of those already qualified for the NAIA National Championships later this month.
Senior middle-distance runner Skylar Forgey posted a great time in the women's 800-meter run. The Colome, S.D., native won the event with a time of 2 minutes, 18.27 seconds, besting the 16-runner field by more than four seconds. Forgey added a seventh-place showing in the 200-meter dash, an event she does not normally compete in.
In her final competition before the NAIA National Championships, senior Nicole Court-Menendez (Lewiston, Maine) took second place in the 5000-meter racewalk with a time of 27:31.02. She will compete at nationals later this month, looking for her sixth overall All-American finish.
Freshman Ben Hammer (Dell Rapids, S.D.) continued his breakout first season for the Tigers with a pair of second-place finishes. Hammer took second with a personal best 15.85 meter toss in the shot put, while adding a throw of 47.38 meters in the discus.
The Tigers head to the GPAC Championships hosted by Hastings College Friday and Saturday in Hastings, Neb.
