Awards & Honors

Redshirt Senior (2023): started in all 11 games as a wide receiver, kick returner, and at times the Tigers punter ... after earning Honorable Mentions with a strong season last year, Nelson turned it up this year setting new career-highs in yards (776) and touchdowns (8) on his way to being named to the GPAC All-Conference Second Team ... was also named a Honorable Mention as a kick returner. Nelson finished the season with 50 catches for 776 yards and eight touchdowns which propelled him to ninth all-time in career receptions and receiving yards in DWU history ... had a career day with his eight catches for 147 yards and three touchdowns against No. 1 Northwestern (11/4/23) ... this wasn’t the only time Nelson had three touchdowns in a game on the season, as he found the endzone three times against (RV) Midland with his 10 catches and 118 yards (9/16/23) ... recorded 100+ yards in four games during the 2023 season.

Redshirt Junior (2022): started in all 11 games at receiver for the Tigers earning Honorable Mention honors at the new position in his first season...made the switch from quarterback last year to receiver for this season and made an immediate impact...finished the season with 711 yards receiving on 51 receptions (6 shy of being top-10 single-season in DWU history) and seven touchdowns (6 receiving / 1 rushing)...Kiel's top performance was in the first game of the season against Dakota State (8/25/22) when he went off for a season high 12 receptions, 121 yards and one touchdown...Nelson also had a big day against Hastings (9/24/22) when he recorded six receptions for a season high 142 yards and a touchdown...currently sits fifth in receiving yards in the GPAC...with these yearly totals Kiel also finished his career with last year's numbers of 1,093 yards passing, six touchdowns, 371 yards rushing and two rushing touchdowns.

Junior (2021): Led the quarterback group in 2021 ... played in 10 games for the Tigers ... completed 99 of his 196 attempts for a 50.5 completion percentage ... tossed for a total of 1,093 yards and averaged 109.3 yards per game ... was also strong on the ground, running for 371 yards on 76 carries ... tallied a season high in passing yards against Hastings at home with 194 yards ... rushed for 150 yards on 18 attempts on the road at No. 18 Dordt, tallying his career high in rushing yards for a game.

Sophomore (2020): Saw action in four games ... carried the ball 14 times for a total of 13 rushing yards ... completed 26-of-54 passing attempts for 305 total passing yards and one touchdown.

Freshman (2019): Averaged 113 passing yards and 29.9 rushing yards per game ... recorded his best passing game against Northwestern College with 206 passing yards ... finished the season with 791 passing yards and 209 rushing yards ... played in seven games.

High School: He was named All-State Football and was a two-time team captain ... helped his team to a 2016 South Dakota Class 'AA' State Football Championship, where he tallied a 91-yard touchdown run ... was a three-year starter and a four-time letterwinner in football ... also participated in basketball for four seasons and track for three years.
